J..J. Abrams reinvents "Star Trek" out May 8 in regular theaters and IMAX!Well folks, it's April and the Summer Movie Season is less than a month away! Here is a look at the movies that are sure to be blockbuster hits this summer:
May
1 - X-Men Origins: Wolverine (PG-13) starring Hugh Jackman
With the first three X-Men movies grossing over $1 billion worldwide ($600 million + in the U.S.), this is sure to be a box office smash. James Logan (aka Wolverine) and his brother Victor Creed (who will later become Sabretooth) run away together as children in the mid 1850's after Logan kills their biological father who had murdered Logan's adoptive father. After serving together in many wars they are recruited by William Stryker to serve in a special unit made up of mutants. After wiping out an African villiage, Logan quits the unit and goes off to live a life of peace in the Canadian Rockies with his girlfriend later to be known as the Silver Fox.
Six years pass for the both of them until Stryker shows up and asks Logan to come back and be a part of a new Weapon X project. Logan refuses but Creed shows up and murders Logan's girlfriend leaving him wanting revenge against his brother. Logan accepts Strykers offer to be infused with Adamantium so that he can be indestructable and go after his revenge but is double crossed by Stryker and hears him give the order to wipe his memories. Escaping before this can happen, he goes searching for Creed killing anyone who gets in his way.
Prediction: Will easily top the Box Office May 1 with close to $100 million on its way to a total take of $185 million. Not quite "Spider-man 3" numbers but a great opening and the best yet for the X-Men series. The year 2011 will see X-Men Origins: Magneto.
8 - Star Trek (aka Star Trek 11) (PG-13) starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg
Boy oh boy. This is the film I am most excited about this summer as Star Trek is reborn into a great action packed sci-fi adventure. The first summer Star Trek since 1989, who better then J.J. Abrams to update this fledging movie franchise? After stinkers in "Star Trek: Insurrection" and "Star Trek: Nemesis," Abrams decided to reinvent this series to make it action packed and something fans can be proud of. A newly Captained James T. Kirk of the U.S.S. Enterprise fights Romulans from the future, who are interfering with history by destroying the Federation. A backstory as to how Kirk and Spock meet and became cadets is also introduced.
Prediction: This is the movie of the summer in my mind. Will it crack $100 million? Perhaps. It's tough to gauge how this movie will do with this being the first Star Trek movie in 7 years. It should easily rack up $200 million +. Nevertheless it will be successful and launch the careers of many of these talented young stars. Also, be sure to see this in IMAX!
15 - Angels and Demons (R) starring Tom Hanks, Ewen McGregor
The prequel to the critically acclaimed "The Da Vinci Code," Hanks stars once again as Robert Langdon with Ron Howard directing. When Langdon discovers evidence of the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati - the most powerful underground organization in history - he also faces a deadly threat to the existence of the secret organization's most despised enemy: the Catholic Church. When Langdon learns that the clock is ticking on an unstoppable Illuminati time bomb, he jets to Rome, where he joins forces with Vittoria Vetra, a beautiful and enigmatic Italian scientist. Embarking on a nonstop, action-packed hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and even to the heart of the most secretive vault on earth, Langdon and Vetra will follow a 400-year-old trail of ancient symbols that mark the Vatican's only hope for survival.
Prediction: This movie will have as strong an opening as "The Da Vinci Code." Probably around $50-$75 million in it's opening weekend on its way to making over $200 million. Should be another solid movie for Hanks and Howard that might even earn them Oscar buzz come next January.
21 - Terminator: Salvation (R) starring Christian Bale
Another action-packed blockbuster hits May as Bale tries to bring back the Terminator franchise 6 years after T3. Set in post-apocalyptic 2018, John Connor is the man fated to lead the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators. But the future Connor was raised to believe that its altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright, a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet’s operations, where they uncover the terrible secret behind the possible annihilation of mankind.
Prediction: This movie will be big. How big remains to be seen but I believe $80-$100 million will be the box office haul of this movie that will go on to raise well over $200 million for the summer.
22 - Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (PG) starring Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Amy Adams
Ben Stiller tries again as the night guard Larry Daley in Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. After a harrowing night in the first movie, Daley thrives at the New York-based museum. But when Jedediah and Octavis are shipped to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. by mistake, it's up to Daley to rescue them. One of the rare movies that looks better than the first, families will flock to go see this.
Prediction: Opening on Memorial Day weekend will help this movie earn well over $100 million dollars in its opening weekend on it's way to close to $300 million total. Family movies always do well and Ben Stiller has a hot commodity with this movie franchise.
June
19 - Year One (R) starring Jack Black, Michael Cera
Interesting pairing but it could work. When a couple of lazy hunter-gatherers (Jack Black and Michael Cera) are banished from their primitive village, they set off on an epic journey through the ancient world in Columbia Pictures' comedy "Year One." Harold Ramis directs. The screenplay is by Harold Ramis & Gene Stupnitsky & Lee Eisenberg ("The Office") from a story by Harold Ramis.
Prediction: An OK opening around $10-$25 million on its way to making close or barely over $100 million. Hard to say where this will land.
24 - Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (PG-13) starring Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox
If the first movie is any indication, this movie is going to blow that one away. Michael Bay's vision of the changeling-robots from space is awesome! Decepticon forces return to Earth on a mission to take Sam Witwicky prisoner, after the young hero learns the truth about the ancient origins of the Transformers. Joining the mission to protect humankind is Optimus Prime, who forms an alliance with international armies for a second epic battle.
Prediction: Defintely a hit with over $100 million in its first weekend on its way to well over $200 million. Sexy Megan Fox + awesome action = damn good time.
July
1 - Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (G) starring the voices of Ray Romano and Co.
Once again the gang of Ray Romano as a Wooly Mammoth and Denis Leary as the Saber-toothed Tiger along with their other pals are back. Scrat is still trying to nab the ever-elusive nut (while, maybe, finding true love); Manny (Ray Romano) and Ellie (Queen Latifah) await the birth of their mini-mammoth, Sid (John Leguizamo) the sloth gets into trouble when he creates his own makeshift family by hijacking some dinosaur eggs; and Diego (Denis Leary) the saber-toothed tiger wonders if he's growing too "soft" hanging with his pals. On a mission to rescue the hapless Sid, the gang ventures into a mysterious underground world, where they have some close encounters with dinosaurs, battle flora and fauna run amuck – and meet a relentless, one-eyed, dino-hunting weasel named Buck.
Prediction: Should do well over the July 4 weekend. No big mega blockbuster to speak of this summer in the July 4 slot as Transformers opens a week earlier. Should make about $55-$70 million on its way to $150 million or more.
Public Enemies (R) - starring Johnny Depp, Christian Bale
An interesting weekend to open but this movie has Oscar all over it. Depp and Bale star in the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger (Depp)—the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover's fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public.
Prediction: With an R-rating, this movie will do well but not on blockbuster proportions. Look for it to get $25-$35 million in its opening weekend on its way to $100 million +.
10 - Bruno (NC-17)* - starring Sacha Baron Cohen
The gay fashion designer from the Ali-G Show makes his movie debut with similar hijinks and interviews like he had on the show.
Note: Right now, this movie is rated NC-17 for strong sexual content. It should be able to reform and pass the board but it will get a barely passable R-rating so be warned.
Prediction: Wow. This movie is even more grotesque than Borat. Will it make as much? I only see this movie making $30 million on it's way to $75 million overall if that.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince opens July 17 in regular theaters and IMAX!
17 - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (PG) starring Daniel Radcliffe, Michael Gambon
Potter fans can finally breathe! The film that was delayed from a November opening to a July opening (8 friggin months!) can now see the film that starts the beginning of the end of this glorious series. Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that dangers may even lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. Together they work to find the key to unlock Voldemort's defenses and, to this end, Dumbledore recruits his old friend and colleague, the well-connected and unsuspecting bon vivant Professor Horace Slughorn, whom he believes holds crucial information.
Meanwhile, the students are under attack from a very different adversary: teenage hormones. Harry finds himself more and more drawn to Ginny, but so is Dean Thomas. And Lavender Brown has decided that Ron is the one for her, only she hadn’t counted on Romilda Vane's chocolates! And then there's Hermione, simpering with jealously but determined not to show her feelings. As romance blossoms, one student remains aloof. He is determined to make his mark, albeit a dark one. Love is in the air, but tragedy lies ahead and Hogwarts may never be the same again.
The last part, "Deathly Hollows" will be split into two parts.
Prediction: Huge opening of over $100 million on its way to $300 million. The anticipation will make this one of the biggest summer movies along with Star Trek.
August
7 - G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (PG-13) starring Dennis Quaid, Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Finally, the big screen adaptation of G.I. Joe is here. From the Egyptian desert to deep below the polar ice caps, the elite G.I. JOE team uses the latest in next-generation spy and military equipment to fight the corrupt arms dealer Destro and the growing threat of the mysterious Cobra organization to prevent them from plunging the world into chaos.
Prediction: Should do well even though it's been pushed into the end of the summer rush. I see it making $30 million in its opening weekend on its way to $100 million overall.
21 - Inglorious Basterds (R) starring Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, Samuel L. Jackson
He's baaaaaaaack! Quentin Tarantino's first directed movie since the Grindhouse movie "Death Proof" comes to theaters. The movie begins in German-occupied France, where Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris, where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema.
Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organizes a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of retribution. Known to their enemy as "The Basterds," Raine's squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget Von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of The Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquee, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own.
Prediction: It's a Tarantino movie so there's bound to be great dialogue as he is the master of it. Of course it will do well. How well depends on the critics. I see this movie generating a lot of buzz (even some Oscar buzz) and making $35 million in its opening weekend on its way to $100 million or more.
28 - Final Destination: Death Trip 3-D (R) starring Shantel VanSanten, Bobby Campo
On what should have been a fun-filled day at the races, Nick O'Bannon has a horrific premonition in which a bizarre sequence of events causes multiple race cars to crash, sending flaming debris into the stands, brutally killing his friends and causing the upper deck of the stands to collapse on him. When he comes out of this grisly nightmare Nick panics, persuading his girlfriend, Lori, and their friends, Janet and Hunt, to leave... escaping seconds before Nick's frightening vision becomes a terrible reality. Thinking they've cheated death, the group has a new lease on life, but unfortunately for Nick and Lori, it is only the beginning. As his premonitions continue and the crash survivors begin to die one-by-one--in increasingly gruesome ways--Nick must figure out how to cheat death once and for all before he, too, reaches his final destination. The film marks the latest in the highly popular "Final Destination" series, and its first 3D installment, giving horror fans an especially visceral thrill ride.
Prediction: The 3-D will help this movie tremendously as the fourth installment is really grasping straws right now. I see it opening in the $20-$30 million range en route to an $85 million take.
Those are the main movies I see making the box office interesting this summer. Any that I left out? We'll take a look at independent films in a future blog.
