Washington is now officially a "Hockey Town"

When you live in a sports town like Washington D.C., there is hardly any attention paid to anyone BUT the Redskins. No matter how good or bad they finish, people are still talking about what went wrong this 2008-09 season. Heck, they are even having a dinner to relive their sucky year. Only in Washington D.C.

Well, now that the Redskins have officially sunk into a funk (no Super Bowl since 1991), a new team has emerged to capture the hearts of fans clamoring for a championship: The Washington Capitals.

What a season it has been thus far. Best team in the Southeastern Division, second best team in the Eastern Conference and still shooting to be top dog. With coach Bruce Bourdreau and players like Alexander Ovechkin, Nikolas Backstrom, Alexander Semin, Mike Green and Sergei Federov, the Capitals have gone from being one of the lousy teams year after year to a contender.

Last season when Bourdreau took over the struggling Capitals, he instilled his hockey philosophy and the players bought into it. The proof was in the last game of the 2007-08 season when the Capitals beat the Florida Panthers to capture their first division title since 2000. This was the start of something big.

What came next was a gruge match against the Flyers that ended, sadly, in a game 7 exit by a team few saw losing that series. Lessons were learned and a hunger insued.

Last night, the Capitals awoke after a three game slide to rough up the free falling Penguins 6-3.

This season after a slow start, the Capitals are one of the best teams in the NHL. Great coaching, great players and a tenacity to make the playoffs and be in it to win it. Against the best, they flourish. Here's to a team that deserves our praise. Let the Redskins sit on the back burner this team is the future of Washington sports.
