A day in the life of a Washington Capitals Fan

What a great weekend for hockey in D.C.! Alex Ovechkin scored five goals in two days and the Washington Capitals defeated the defending Stanley Cup Champions on home ice! Here is a blog about my day at the Caps - Red Wings game.

10:00 a.m. - Roll out of bed and get ready for the early ice time of 12:30 p.m.

11:15 a.m. - Get onto Metro Train at Vienna. Metro running slower than usual on a day where hardly anyone is riding.

12:15 a.m. - Finally get to Verizon Center. Lot's of Red Wings fans. I knew we were in for a fight.

12:30 p.m. - Intros are done. Tom Poti returns to the lineup after missing 15 games in a row due to a bad groin. Great to see the team near full strength.

Between 12:35 pm and 3 p.m. - Game is a tight one. Caps let up wacky first goal, a twisty backhander from Ville Leino, giving the Red Wings a 1-0 lead. Annoying Red Wing fans behind me but I am ignoring them. Caps tie it up on a Viktor Koslov rip shot to make it 1-1. End of the first.

In the second, Caps strike with a Mike Green goal to take a 2-1 lead. Towards the end of the second, the Red Wings tied it up 2-2 with a Johan Franzen power play goal. Guys behind me anger me even more with their insessive taunting. Turn around and hit the guy. Tell him to stop it because we all know how great the Red Wings are but he's in our house. Guy and his friend apologize to me. No more crap the rest of the game.

Third period brings one of the best finishes ever. After telling Conklin in goal "It's coming...it's coming for you," Alex Ovechkin made true to his words. With 8 minutes to go in the game, Ovechkin slapped a shot from the right side to make it 3-2. Minutes later, Ovechkin followed it up four seconds into a power play with a slap shot from the left to put the Caps up 4-2. Could this be it? Well, with five minutes to go, I was holding my breath. Three straight penalties in the final minutes of the game were not enough for the Red Wings who fell 4-2.

The Capitals proceeded to cap off the weekend with a hat-trick performance by Ovechkin as the Ottawa Senators lost 7-4. Caps are currently 32-15-4 with 68 points in second place in the Eastern Conference. Here's hoping the winning streak continues.

*BREAKING NEWS*: Capitals Captain Chris Clark is out for the season. More on this at http://www.washingtoncaps.com/.
